Simone Kuhn
Background
Simone grew up in Frankfurt area and carried out her bachelor's studies in biomedical chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). She decided to stay for the consecutive master's program at the same institution where she gained her expertise in synthetic organic chemistry from different research groups. She worked in the group of Prof. Johannes Wahl focusing on the development of novel methods for nitrogen insertion. In addition, she expanded her expertise in electroorganic synthesis in the laboratory of Prof. Siegfried Waldvogel, where she investigated a new polycyclic naphthalenone motif derived from naphthols in a cyclic flow setup. During a six-month research internship, she joined the group of Prof. Bruce Lipshutz at UCSB in California, working on greener solutions for Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura borylations. After finishing her undergraduate studies, she decided to obtain some industrial experience during an internship at Syngenta in Stein, Switzerland. There, she focused on iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation in the context of high-throughput experimentation. Enjoying the vibrant chemistry community in Switzerland, she joined the Sparr group in 2025 as a PhD student to support research endeavors in stereoselective catalysis.
In her free time, Simone enjoys outdoor sports such as climbing and running, as well as playing jazz piano.
